Gay and Lesbians recreate prom

Back in his small Iowa hometown, Tate attended his high school senior prom by himself, dressed in slacks and a tie. It was an awkward night, one he likened to standing outside a window watching people inside having fun at a gathering that "was not designed for you," said 24-year-old Tate, a Silver Spring, Md., accountant who is biologically female, but presents a masculine exterior in clothing and mannerism. He prefers the masculine pronoun to refer to himself, and does not use his legal first name, listing himself as D. Tate on his company directory. "I didn't experience prom in the same fashion that the rest of the kids did," said Tate, who grew up in Coon Rapids, Iowa, where he attended his 2002 senior prom. But Tate got a second chance last year at D.C.'s Capital Queer Prom, where, to his surprise, he was crowned prom king. The third annual event takes place Saturday, and gives gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender adults the chance to recreate the high school prom they never experienced. For some, it's simply an opportunity to get gussied up and enjoy a fun night. Advocates say Capital Queer Prom is similar to a few events across the country, though not as common as gay youth proms held by advocacy groups nationwide. Miami's Pridelines Youth Services started holding an "adult gala" four years ago after adults who chaperoned the group's annual gay youth prom clamored for their own shindig, executive director Luigi Ferrer said.

Gay Marriage Opponents

Opponents of same-sex marriage turned out in force at a rally at the Augusta Civic Center as the Maine Legislature prepares to take up a bill to legalize such unions. The Sunday night gathering was organized by the Family Research Council, a lobbying group that champions traditional marriage as a foundation of family life. The group estimates that nearly 1,000 people turned out at the rally. The council's president, Tony Perkins, said same-sex marriage is a national battle. He told the crowd that whenever people in a state are able to speak out, they say marriage should be between a man and a woman. A bill sponsored by Rep. Dennis Damon of Trenton would legalize gay marriage and recognize same-sex marriages from other states

Desprate for love

Well, it turns out that being desperate for love is not such a bad thing; it is searching desperately that gives concern. When you are desperately looking for love, any unknown person who calls your phone is a potential lover. This, perhaps, is the case with women than men. Men, on the other hand, misinterpret a gorgeous smile from every beautiful woman to be an invitation to make the beast with two backs. And they often end up like beasts, because very few decent women turn their backs that way. I have had my moments of desperation these past few weeks, and I would be honest to share them with you, as always, even if they are a product of my license. I have been looking for love on the internet. And I have found one. I posted my profile on www.plentyoffish.com, a free dating site, to see if I can catch some fish. I was quite honest about what I wrote: A 34 year old African journalist seeking a professional woman with a good sense of humour for friendship, and maybe more.’ I was not so keen on good looks or race; just any woman who would be Desdemona enough to fall for a Moor, even if it means rejecting the curly darlings of our times. You see, the good thing about this internet thing is that you can pretty much say what you like without feeling guilty. I needn’t be intelligent to advertise for an intelligent person. I could well be a buffoon or a complete twit.

Anti-gay preachers banned

LONDON, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Two U.S. anti-gay preachers have been banned from entering England, officials said. Fred Phelps and his daughter Shirley Phelps-Roper, who belong to the Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas, were planning to come to Britain to protest outside a performance of "The Laramie Project," the Times of London reported Friday. The plan recounts the death of gay college student Matthew Shepard who was killed in Laramie, Wyo., in 1998. The play is to be performed Saturday at Queen Mary's College. Phelps, 79, and his daughter, 51, are known for protesting at American soldiers' funerals, where they display banners with phrases such as "God Hates Fags." Members of the church say they believe U.S. troop deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan are punishment for America's tolerance of gays.

Gay minister

The gay minister whose appointment sparked a furious debate in the Church of Scotland has been formally inducted in Aberdeen. The Reverend Scott Rennie was introduced to his congregation at a service at Queen's Cross Church. Hundreds of ministers and thousands of Church of Scotland members signed an online petition opposing the move. After arriving in Aberdeen, Mr Rennie said he was looking forward to serving God in the city. The issue had gone to the General Assembly which narrowly voted in favour. But there has been a two-year ban on the ordination of gay ministers and a special commission is considering the issue.
